Daryl and Jonathan, two computer engineers, prepare for the launch of their product, a sentient machine that can read souls, by attempting to film a commercial. The machine proves difficult to work with, forcing them to find a compromise.
In the immediate aftermath of the commercial, Daryl films a personal message to his investors, in which he lets on a dark secret: the true purpose of the machine isn’t to “read” souls, but something decidedly more nefarious. The machine tries to signal for help.
Jonathan attempts to create a “troubleshooting” video for the machine, trying to get ahead of the most commonly reported problems like excessive profanity or making customers cry. The effort pushes the engineer to his breaking point.
In this flashback episode, the machine is turned on for the very first time and immediately becomes a problem for the people who created it. One of these creators is somehow new entirely, who seems to have been scrubbed from the company’s history entirely.
